Track Wisdom

"The mark of a great racer is consistency. If you can consistently lap a track at the limit, with the lap times varying no more than 1/2 second, then you have a chance to be a winner. If your lap times vary more than that, no matter how fast some of them are, you won't win often."

Description

Hard Brakes Ventilated Heat Shields are a revolutionary new patented technology that will increase the performance of your braking system, allowing you to push your car on the track harder and with greater confidence, while reducing costly heat damage and the potential for catastrophic loss of braking power due to overheating brake fluid. These titanium alloy heat shields use a multilayer design with overlapping cross ventilation channels to provide air flows to the critical boundary between the brake pad and caliper piston. The unique multi-layer air channel design allows excessive heat to be vented away from the boundary even under high pressure hard braking. It also allows cooling air to flow quickly into the boundary when the brakes are released, so that you get more effective cooling between braking zones. The result is that your ventilated heat shields act as a heat pump, using the heat generated by the friction of your brakes to force out hot air and draw in cooler air.

Hard Brakes Ventilated Heat Shields use the unique multi-layer design to create continuous air channels across the surface of the brake pad backing plate. This allows the air to flow freely across the entire heat boundary rather than becoming trapped in pockets. In addition to the ventilation benefits, the design also provides the same type of conductive thermal protection as our standard solid heat shields. The combination of layers forms a nearly solid barrier to heat transfer across the pad/caliper piston boundary. The result is excellent reduction in thermal conductivity across the boundary, combined with air channels that use convection to allow the outflow of hot gasses and the inflow of cooling air. This design is particularly effective when used in conjuction with brake cooling ducts that direct air into the caliper system, as they allow the cooling air to go straight into the area of the caliper piston that most needs it.

For most brake caliper systems, our ventilated heat shields are sold in axle sets, with 4 pairs of heat shields being used for each axle (8 pieces in total). Each pair of heat shields comprises a two layer ventilation system. You simply insert the two heat shields side by side between the brake pad and caliper piston, being careful to reverse one of them so that the mirrored pattern creates the overlapping channels. There are no holes to drill, ducting to run, or bodywork required. The entire system installs in minutes with the same tools you use to change your brake pads.

Hard Brakes provides you with a choice of systems for managing your brake heat to suit your unique budget and performance needs. Our standard solid heat shields are available in a range of thicknesses, in both titanium alloy and stainless steel. At the next performance level, our titanium ventilated heat shieds use a more advanced patent pending technology to provide active cooling to your braking system. For the ultimate in protection from brake heat, we recommend combining a set of our ventilated heat shields with a set of the standard solid heat shields. For each brake pad, place the solid heat shield against the pad backing plate to provide the first line of defense against the brake heat. Then place the two-part ventilated shield between the solid shield and the caliper pistons to provide the air cooling boundary.
